Lake Oconee is formed by Wallace Dam over the Oconee River, with the Apalachee River also being a part of the system. The lake covers 18,971 acres and has 374 miles of shoreline. It is located in Greene, Putnam, and Morgan Counties. That is the technical description.
Here is mine.....
My parents first home at Lake Oconee in 1990 was a cute "weekender" and then I moved to Lake Oconee in 2002. There were no red lights, grocery stores, restaurants. Everyone knew you went to Jerry's bait and tackle for bait, eggs, and the paper. It is truly amazing to me how much our "little" area has grown. We are more than just a lake...we are a community. With all the festivities, year around boating, water activities, over 100 holes of golf by the top architects, cultural events in all 3 counties, or just want to lay by the pool and take a nap, there is always something to do here. Lake Oconee really took off once the Ritz Carlton opened in 2002. Now we have over 15 restaurants...not talking chains...true one of a kind restaurants, with former chef's from our local Ritz, chef's from the different gated communities all whom saw they wanted to stay and live at Lake Oconee. There were 2 things missing in our area a good regional hospital which offered surgery and accomplished schools. We now have both of those pieces of the puzzle. Below are a few links to view for yourself why we love Lake Oconee. Know this....most everyone here was a "newbie" and they remember how easily they were embraced by other former "newbies", therefore it is very easy to meet and be embraced by our community. This is why we are a group of folks who feel so fortunate to experience Lake Oconee living in such a picturesque and tranquil setting.
